Reading Glasses Roundup (Part 3)

If you have had trouble finding stylish, comfortable reading glasses—or if you’re shopping for your very first pair—today’s topic is for you. We are looking at some of the most important factors to consider when choosing a new pair of reading glasses, as well as a few considerations to keep you seeing clearly all day long.

“Ready Made” vs. “Custom” Reading Glasses

It can be tempting to reach for the inexpensive readers at your local drugstore, but before you stock up on the pre-fab version consider purchasing custom-made readers—there are more than a few benefits, including:

  • Better fit: Pre-made reading glasses are “one-size-fits-all” which as we all know often means “one-size-fits-few”
  • More accurate: Most people don’t have the exact same prescription for both eyes, but pre-made readers have the same prescription in both lenses
  • Added features: Do you need an anti-reflective coating to eliminate lens reflections? UV or blue light protection? Progressive, bifocal, or other special lenses? Custom readers are the way to go.

Screen Time

It’s 2019, which means you are probably logging in more screen time than you were five or ten years ago. Reading glasses don’t always mesh well with computer screens, and don’t protect your eyes from high-energy visible blue light which is damaging to eyes over time.

If you log many hours a day in front of a computer screen, it’s a good idea to invest in eyeglasses that both help you see better and offer protection.

Summer Shades

Enjoy reading outdoors again with a pair of reading sunglasses. Reading sunglasses mean you can stay poolside for hours turning pages, or more easily engage in any number of your favorite outdoor activities, from golf to gardening to road tripping. What type of lens is right for you?

  • Fully magnified lenses have the full Rx through the entire lens—perfect for reading by the pool for hours;
  • If you want to keep your sunglasses on without having to take them off to see distances, bifocal lenses may be your choice;
  • Polarized glasses cut glare off water and other surfaces—another great choice for poolside, or any activities on or near the water.
