Meet the Team: Daniel Protz, Owner and Lead Optician

When you shop at Eye Elegance, you’re not just getting the best selection of high-quality eyewear in Houston—you’re also working with a team of professionals dedicated to giving you the best quality service as well. “Meet the Team” is our latest blog series; today you’ll meet Eye Elegance owner and lead optician, Daniel Protz. Daniel’s clientele includes some of Houston’s most recognizable faces, but today we’re shining the spotlight on him!

Background: I was born in Nebraska, lived in Michigan, and moved to Texas while in second grade. After a 39-year relationship with my high school sweetheart, I am widowed. I have two sons, both of whom are married, and two grandsons. My hobbies include traveling on my motorcycle, snow skiing, rock climbing, water skiing, pistol shooting, duck hunting, and long walks on the beach. I have a BSID from Texas A&M University, and hundreds of hours in continuing education directly related to the field of opticianry.

How Daniel Sees Things: I’ve worn eyeglasses since the fourth grade, and I have a number of ophthalmic glasses, some with exotic finishes, including solid 18k gold, wood, buffalo horn, graphite, carbon fiber, and sterling silver. Some of my favorites I currently wear are from Blac, Chrome Hearts, l.a.Eyeworks, Lindberg, and Theo.

Sunny Outlook: I couldn’t live without sunglasses, and I have many pair for different activities. My current favorites are my BLAC, 3-D printed front with carbon fiber temples, and a ‘blast from the past’ pair from John Paul Gaultier.

Trendwatching: It’s difficult to pick a single favorite brand. My perspective isn’t from being just an eyewear wearer, but includes the business side—relationships with the owners, representatives, and designers of the world’s best eyewear.

Some days I really want to make a statement with my frames and others, just a statement. As for trends, the use of new and nonconventional materials is exciting. This brings to market fresh textures, colors, and interesting designs.

Squad Goals: It’s really only “work” part of the time because I enjoy what I do, and the talented people I work with, so it often doesn’t seem like work at all. I also enjoy the many friendships that have developed over the years with our client base. Spending time with these people outside of the retail relationship has given me the opportunity to experience new things, as well as share what I have with others.
