Back-to-School: Vision & Technology

Students from kindergarten to graduate school spend more time in front of a screen than ever. Computers, smartphones, laptops, smart chalkboards, television, and more, means “back-to-school” is a time for vision awareness.

Eye Relief

The best way to protect eyes from too much screen time is to take a break. A general rule of thumb is to look up from your screen every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds, and looking at something about 20 feet away; scanning the room, focusing on things at varying depths, gives your eyes a chance to refocus and relax.

Computer Glasses

Computer glasses help alleviate eye strain, blurred vision, headaches, and other symptoms associated with extended screen time. Computer glasses can be customized to your individual needs; for example, placing the optimum lens power where you need it to work comfortably at your computer. There are different types of computer glasses out there, and an Eye Elegance optician can help.

Tips to Reduce Eye Strain

Reduce screen time overall, so time spent working or learning in front of the computer is more comfortable and efficient. Power off all of your electronics earlier at night to improve your ability to fall and stay asleep, and leave your smartphone in another room so you’re not tempted to look at it in the middle of the night.
